Oysters
Pacific oysters are a very healthy
food are well balanced, easily digestible, nutritious food, rich in minerals and vitamins.
The C.S.I.R.O research shows that oysters are low in cholesterol and high in omega-3 oils,
calcium, iron and zinc. Few foods can compare with oysters in terms of their nutritional
value.
It is the most common oysters in the world, making up
over 90% of all oysters produced. Pacific Oysters are highly adaptable. Currently being
grown successfully in Tasmania. Production in Tasmania's cultivated oyster industry is
dominated by the Pacific oyster, and in 1994-95 the State produced 4 million dozen with a
farm gate value of $15.2 million. Rapid development in the farming of blue mussel, along
with the continuing implementation of Marine Farming Development Plans, should ensure the
continued growth of this sector. Production is anticipated to reach 1000 tones of mussels
and 9 million dozen oysters by the year 2000.
