May, 2008: FISHING REPORT:  Smallmouth Bass Fishing Report for the New, James & Maury Rivers in Virginia.
by Rob England of Appalachian Bronzeback Adventures

Rob England of Appalachian Bronzeback adventures reports smallmouth bass are biting on the New, James and Maury rivers in Virginia.

We have been  averaging 25-30 fish per trip with at least 1 trophy citation fish of 20" or  4lbs per trip.

Use Rapala X-Raps XR -8's and weightless, wacky rigged senkos. The key is to use the X-Rap XR - 8 in shallower stretches and the new XRD - 8's in the deeper stretches around deep ledges. Reel the the deep model down to the desired depth and then begin the jerk, jerk, pause method. Start out with a quick pace on the jerks and slow down if you are not getting bites right away. If you are not getting strikes, consider throwing the larger XR -10 model. This is also a great bait for Muskies on all three rivers.

The new XRD - 8's dive down 6'-10' and will entice the bigger smallies to hit this time of year. The senkos should be thrown in the faster stretches of water where there are eddies after a drop or below a rapid. The key with this bait is less is more. Just throw the bait out and let the current move the bait and hand on!
