The Sea Fisheries Department is a public research organisation, depending from and supervised by the Ministry of the Flemish Community. The Department was established in 1962 (albeit with a different name), as one of the satellites of the Centre for Agricultural Research in Ghent. Until 2001, this Centre was part of the federal Ministry of Agriculture, Traders and Small Enterprises, but since 2002, it has been re-assigned to the Flemish Government (one of the three regional governments in the federalised State of Belgium).
