Fisheries in Oman
Around 29,000 fishermen are directly involved in fishing activities in the Sultanate, with a further 5,000 employed in secondary occupations. Traditional fishermen operating with the use of small outboard-motor boats roughly bring in 85 per cent of the country’s total catch, and the rest of the lot is involved into commercial fishing.

Aquaculture and fish processing ventures are proliferating in the Sultanate, thanks to a burgeoning worldwide appetite for healthful fish, especially from countries with an unspoiled marine environment. An increasing number of fish processing firms are currently cashing in on the growing demand for seafood in the country.

In the Sultanate, some 20 fish processing companies have so far won approval to market Omani fish products to quality-conscious Japan, the European Union (EU) and the North American markets. Quality control and hygiene important, which all fish exporters must swear by if they wish to enjoy unfettered market access to Europe and Japan in particular.

AQUASTAT is FAO's global information system on water and agriculture developed by the Land and Water Division. It collects, analyses and disseminates data and information by country and by region. RAIS - Regional Aquaculture Information System - The RAIS groups all Member countries of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) (Bahrain, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates) which has decided to establish a web-based information system to facilitate the exchange of aquaculture information in the Gulf area and to develop an informal, flexible and functional network of regional experts to promote and develop the sector in the region.
