Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile for Oman - aquatic species caught by country or area, by species items, by FAO major fishing areas, and year, for all commercial, industrial, recreational and subsistence purposes. The harvest from mariculture, aquaculture and other kinds of fish farming is also included.

 

Fisheries in Oman
Around 29,000 fishermen are directly involved in fishing activities in the Sultanate, with a further 5,000 employed in secondary occupations. Traditional fishermen operating with the use of small outboard-motor boats roughly bring in 85 per cent of the country’s total catch, and the rest of the lot is involved into commercial fishing.

Aquaculture and fish processing ventures are proliferating in the Sultanate, thanks to a burgeoning worldwide appetite for healthful fish, especially from countries with an unspoiled marine environment. An increasing number of fish processing firms are currently cashing in on the growing demand for seafood in the country.

In the Sultanate, some 20 fish processing companies have so far won approval to market Omani fish products to quality-conscious Japan, the European Union (EU) and the North American markets. Quality control and hygiene important, which all fish exporters must swear by if they wish to enjoy unfettered market access to Europe and Japan in particular.

RAIS - Regional Aquaculture Information System - The RAIS groups all Member countries of the Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) (Bahrain, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates) which has decided to establish a web-based information system to facilitate the exchange of aquaculture information in the Gulf area and to develop an informal, flexible and functional network of regional experts to promote and develop the sector in the region.

 

 

Ocean Health Index Oman - The Ocean Health Index is a valuable tool for the ongoing assessment of ocean health. By providing a means to advance comprehensive ocean policy and compare future progress, the Index can inform decisions about how to use or protect marine ecosystems. The Index is a collaborative effort, made possible through contributions from more than 65 scientists/ocean experts and partnerships between organizations including the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Sea Around Us, Conservation International, National Geographic, and the New England Aquarium.
