Commercial Fisheries in Romania

The Romanian Black Sea coastline is 256 km long. There are a number of significant rivers: the Danube, the Mures and the Prut.

Fisheries, aquaculture, as well as processing, distribution and trade activities are present in all the regions of the country. Romanian commercial fisheries production stems from the Black Sea, inland fishing, and aquaculture.

Black Sea Fishing
Marine fishing takes place exclusively in the Romanian Black Sea national waters. The national fishing fleet is almost entirely represented by the small scale fishery. Main products captured are Whelk (Rapana venosa), European sprat (Sprattus sprattus), Black Sea shad (Alosa maeotica), turbot (Psetta maxima). All fish landed is used for human consumption.

Inland Fishing
Commercial inland fishing takes place in rivers, ponds, reservoirs, including the Danube River, the Danube Delta and Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Species captured are goldfish (Carassius auratus), freshwater bream (Abramis brama), roach (Rutilus rutilus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), pontic shad (Alosa pontica), pike-perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) and wels catfish (Silurus glanis).

Aquaculture in Romania
The aquaculture sector in Romania is mainly freshwater. The species raised are European and Asian carps, trout, pike-perch, perch and sturgeon.

Seafood Processing in Romania
Processing  for both fresh water and marine species. The native species commonly used for processing are: carp, bighead carp, bream, wels catfish, perch, pike and trout. The most common marine species (which are mostly imported) used for processing are salmon, herring, sprat and mackerel.

 

Romanian National Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Agency's main attribute drafting the national strategy and specific regulations in the field of fisheries, market organization in fishery products, as well as enforcement and compliance. The Agency also has responsibility for defining and implementing the policy on conservation and management of living aquatic resources of natural fish habitats in aquaculture , to processing and market organization in fishery products. The Agency invest Fisheries Operational Programme (POP) for the first sale related infrastructure, ports / points / fishery shelters and landing points, as well as budget allocations.

European Commission - Fisheries - The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the European Union's instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. It was created to manage a common resource and to meet the obligation set in the original Treaties of the then European Community. In addition, the Treaties which created the Community stated that there should be a common policy in this area, that is, common rules adopted at EU level and implemented in all Member States.

RomFish - Association of Fish Producers

National Association of Manufacturers of Pescarie ROMFISH was founded in 2008 on the old structure Breeders Association of Fish FISH MOLD. ROMFISH operates under GEO 26/2000 and is based on the principle of participation and representation of all those involved in the fishing sector in Romania (farmers, processors, fishermen's organizations, service providers in the field of fish). The principle of representation is based on delivered production in the previous year, and the fee is a percentage of turnover. The association is represented by an honorary president, elected for a period of two years, the Board of Directors. Board consists of the 10 members, in descending order of turnover, plus a representative from among processors. The aim of this Association is to advocate for legislative and organizational framework ensuring reasonable for those working in the fishing sector. Also, we aim to increase market share for fishermen Romanian, and reducing the cost of raw materials supply.

 

General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean

Consisting of 22 Member countries along with the European Community, the GFCM’s objectives are to promote the development, conservation, rational management and best utilization of living marine resources, as well as the sustainable development of aquaculture in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and connecting waters. Membership is open to both Mediterranean coastal states and regional economic organizations as well as to United Nations member states whose vessels engage in fishing in Mediterranean waters.

 

Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile for Romania - aquatic species caught by country or area, by species items, by FAO major fishing areas, and year, for all commercial, industrial, recreational and subsistence purposes. The harvest from mariculture, aquaculture and other kinds of fish farming is also included.

 

Ocean Health Index Romania - The Ocean Health Index is a valuable tool for the ongoing assessment of ocean health. By providing a means to advance comprehensive ocean policy and compare future progress, the Index can inform decisions about how to use or protect marine ecosystems. The Index is a collaborative effort, made possible through contributions from more than 65 scientists/ocean experts and partnerships between organizations including the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Sea Around Us, Conservation International, National Geographic, and the New England Aquarium.
