Sustainable Fisheries Partnership - Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab - Species: blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus)

The FIP for the Indonesian blue swimming crab (BSC) is industry driven, with Asosiasi Pengelolaan Rajungan Indonesia (APRI), Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab Processors Association, playing a leading role while SFP was involved during the initial scoping and initiation phases of the project. SFP continues to play a role in supporting the FIP through providing technical advice at APRI and the NFI Crab Council’s request.

NFI Crab Council - Committed to Sustainability.

In 2007 major crab processors in Indonesia formed the Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab Processors Association (APRI) in 2007, with the goal of sustainable procurement from healthy stocks. SFP and APRI commissioned an MSC Pre Assessment in 2009. APRI currently consists of 13 crab processing and exporting companies in Indonesia, representing over 90 percent of all crab exported from Indonesia to the US market.

Indonesia Blue Swimming Crab Processors Association (APRI - ASOSIASI PENGELOLAAN RAJUNGAN INDONESIA) - APRI supports Blue Swimming Crab sustainability initiative in Indonesia. It is benefiting all supply chain from industries to more than 65,000 fishermen and 130,000 women who are working at the miniplants are directly employed in the blue swimming crab fishery, while thousand of others are direct stakeholders involved as fishing gears suppliers, middlemen, operators, ice producers, and all of miniplants suppliers where initial crab processing is carried out.APRI and all members are campaigning sustainability crab harvest to the supply chain for effective impact, increasing crab recruitment through stock enhancement, collaborating with Universities to support scientific research, supporting Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries to develop national Fishery Management Plan and working closely with Fishers community to establish community based fishery management. All project activities are managed in a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), which determined as 6 FIP stages.

INDONESIA TUNA FISHERY:

Sustainable Fisheries Partnership. INDONESIA TUNA - Indonesian Yellowfin Tuna Fisheries Improvement Project.

Longline Indian Ocean - The Indian Ocean longline tuna FIP was initiated by Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, and has been the primary industry-led FIP since January 2014. The first phase (2012 – 2014) involved 28 longliners, and the second phase (2015 – 2020) will expand to include 35 contracted vessels.

The FIP supports and contributes to the development, improvement and sustainability of the tuna fishery industry in Indonesia by promoting traceability; improve the availability of accurate data on catches, retained and bycatch; and collaborating with other institutions working on tuna fisheries issues in the country, including working together to improve the management and policy towards sustainable fisheries

Indonesia Tuna Fishery
Indonesia is the biggest tuna producing country, contributing to 12.45% of total commercial tuna production in 2007, followed by Philippines (11.36%), Japan (10.23%), Taiwan (8.3%), and Korea (6.1%). Indonesia also holds important position for highly commercial species, such as yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, albacore, southern bluefin tuna and skipjack. Indonesia is the second important countries to produce yellowfin tuna, after Philippines, contributing to 7.5% of total global yellowfin tuna catches. Indonesia is the third biggest producing country for bigeye, albacore and Southern bluefin tuna in the world, contributing to 9.5%, 8% and 9% of their global catches respectively [FISHSTAT-FAO].

 

Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profile for Indonesia - aquatic species caught by country or area, by species items, by FAO major fishing areas, and year, for all commercial, industrial, recreational and subsistence purposes. ASEAN Seafood Federation (ASF) - ASEAN Seafood Federation (ASF) has been established on May 12, 2009, joining the leading national seafood producers and exporters’ associations of ASEAN countries. Its core members are: Brunei Darussalam Aquaculture Producers Alliance Cooperative (BAPA), Fresh & Frozen Seafood Association of the Philippines (FFSAP), Indonesian Frozen Seafood Association (AP5I), Malaysian Frozen Food Processors Association (MFFPA), Myanmar Fishery Products Processors & Exporters Association (MPEA), the Thai Frozen Food Association (TFFA) and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP)

Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA) - NACA is an intergovernmental organisation that promotes rural development through sustainable aquaculture. NACA seeks to improve rural income, increase food production and foreign exchange earnings and to diversify farm production.
