Also known as Mottled Goatfish, Bartail
Goatfish, Red Mullet
The Bartail
Goatfish occurs in tropical and some warm temperate waters of
the Indo-West Pacific. The species is white to pinkish, with a
red to black stripe and brownish spots on the side of the body.
Shaped like a Whiting, but
slightly more rounded, it has two barbels attached to it's lower jaw and a forked caudal
fin.
The Bartail Goatfish has a
slightly compressed, elongate body that is
covered with large scales. It has a forked
caudal fin, and an anal fin that is opposite and
similar to the second dorsal fin. There are
bands of villiform teeth on the jaws, palatines
and vomer.
The
species is white to pinkish, with a red to black
stripe and brownish spots on the side of the
body. It has a barred tail and yellow barbels.
It is found on sandy substrates close to shore in northern Australian waters.
It is a bottom feeding fish. Good bait to use are worms and prawns.

Angling for Tiny Barbounia,
Goatfish, Red Mullet:
The
Red Mullet is a red/pink colour often with tinges of orange.
They have a large eye and a blunt looking head with a small
mouth on the underside giving away the fact it is a bottom
feeder. The chin has a small barbule underneath.
It is a prized sporting fish which will take small lures and also live
bait.
Fishing on the bottom is the way to go
here as the Red Mullet is a bottom feeding species. They prefer a clean sandy
bottom and are often caught by the Bream angler fishing clean ground.
Best time of day by far is dusk and dawn on half light, they seem to feed
prolifically at this time and then a little after dark. Rarely caught during
daylight but I have had one or two in the day before.
Although goatfishes have been occasionally
caught on small baited hooks, the recent popularity of fishing soft-plastic fish
baits means red mullet and perhaps rare tropical species will become more common
in anglers’ catches.

Cooking
Barbounia, Goatfish, Red Mullet:
Red
Mullet is a popular fish all over the Mediterranean and
several countries do a version cooked in paper; this recipe
would be called Rouget en Papillote in France, Triglie al
Cartoccio in Italy, and Barbounia sto Harti in
Greece.
