Catching Atlantic Salmon | How to Catch Salmon

Angling for Atlantic Salmon:

Atlantic Salmon very closely resemble Brown Trout.  Atlantic salmon have a forked tail, a small mouth not extending past their eyes and their body scales are small.   Their back is blue to silvery blue, to brownish olive.  Their sides are silvery, their belly silvery white and they have small dark spots on the back and sides.

Did You Know?  Atlantic salmon belongs to the same family (Salmonidae) as the trouts.

Adult Atlantic salmon are a streamlined and graceful fish, with a slender caudal peduncle (the “wrist” of the tail) which supports a slightly forked tail. They have small black spots scattered on the body (usually 'x' shaped), the tail is usually unspotted and the adipose fin is not black bordered. Their mouth is moderately large, and extends only to a point below the rear of the eye.

Atlantic salmon are predominantly silver with a darkish blue-green back, but may be almost totally silver or a dark grey colouration in freshwater impoundments. Colour also varies with lifecycle stage and gender with maturing adults becoming darker as spawning time approaches.

They can be diagnosed as different from brown trout in having no large teeth in the mid-line of the roof of the mouth (brown trout do have such teeth).

Principal populations in Victoria were stocked into Lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri (near Camperdown in south-western Victoria) during 2000-2003 when Chinook salmon stocks were unavailable. Due to the previous success of Chinook salmon in both of these waters, stocking of Atlantic salmon has been discontinued as Chinook salmon stock became available once again. No self-supporting populations of either salmon species have established.

In Victorian waters, Atlantic salmon have been stocked into two fertile western Victorian lakes. In these landlocked conditions Atlantic salmon are easily confused with large brown trout.

The salmon cages are mainly in the Huon district, south of Hobart, so it is no surprise that the best Atlantic salmon fishing areas include the Huon, Esperance, and Lune rivers. An added bonus is that these rivers also offer superb sea-run trout fishing. Within these river systems the hot spots for escaped salmon include extensive shallow flats, the mouths of small inflowing streams, and pools immediately below rapids.

Most fishermen flyfish for salmon, but spinning gear can also be used.

Hootchies, bait, and coyote spoons in a three and a half or four inch size are popular. Nasty Boy, green-glow, green nickel, blue nickel and Cop Car coyote spoons are often a good choice to have in the tackle box. Green glow flashers and purple haze flashers are often a good choice when fishing with plastics, spoons, and bait.

Chinook fishing in the Port Alberni Inlet should be reasonably good again this summer with some nice sized salmon. 31 pound chinook caught by Kathi from Saskatchewan Guide is John of Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing on this trip

Walt and brother John from Michigan U.S.A. fished with guide Doug of Slivers Charters and had a wonderful day in the fall in Barkley Sound. Walt landed this Coho Salmon using a white AORL 12 hootchie along the Bamfield Wall

Conditions on the Stamp over the past several days have been relatively with a medium water height. There is currently plenty of snow on the ground which will dramatically change the current conditions. This Fall Steelhead was landed by Rick of Vancouver B.C. Before releasing the fish a great picture of the fish and surrounding area was taken…. Guide Nick shows this chrome Fall Steelhead before putting it back into the water. Picture of the Stamp River which has great Fall Steelhead fishing from October through early December
Salmon fishing in late August and early September was fantastic on the Port Alberni Inlet. Ian (pictured) and his daughter from Vancouver, B.C. fished with guide Doug from Slivers Charters Salmon Sport fishing and had an excellent day of fishing. This salmon was landed using anchovy in a green haze rhys davis teaser head.

Steve fished with Doug of Slivers Charters Salmon Sport Fishing. These two Chinook were landed just around Meares Bluff using four inch green nickel and silver glo coyote spoons.
